The national major science and technology infrastructure is a large and complex scientific research system, which aims at providing highly advanced research measures for exploring the unknown world, discoveringthe laws of nature and realizing the technological revolution. It also lays thematerial and technological foundation for scientific breakthroughs and forsolving substantial S&T issues in development of economy & society. During China's 12th Five-Year-Plan, ratified by the National Ministries,TranslationalMedicine National Major Science and Technology Infrastructure (Xi'an) Project - National Translational Science Center for Molecular Medicinewas established, in an attempt to build the Key Generic Technological Systemof National Molecular Medicine, to illuminate the physiological and pathological mechanisms of diseases at molecular, cell and organismal level, and to translatethe research results into effective means in clinical prediction, diagnosis, prevention,and reparative intervention.

The scientific objectives of the project lie in the interpretation of physiological and pathological mechanisms of diseases atmolecular, cell and organismal level, with a focus on the translation ofresults into effective means of clinical prediction, diagnosis, prevention andtreatment.

Specifically, it involves the following 3 missions:

- To investigate the correlation between thedisease and genetic mutation, the result of which would serve as guidelines fordisease control, diagnosis, and drug administration.

- To design double-targets or multiple-targetsimaging probes for the improvement of the diagnostic accuracy.

- To identify the personal traits andmolecular markers, based on the individual genetic information, environmental information of related proteome and metabolome, as well as the susceptibility,prognosis and therapeutic response of the patients. Then to classify patientsinto different subgroups and make personalized "tailor-made" plan for thepurpose of improving the effectiveness and accuracy of the treatment.

The center covers an area of 17.3 hectares. It isspecialized in investigating tumors, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases,and other life/health- threatening conditions. Equipped with the most advancedmolecular medicine & transitional medicine facilities, the Center takes theconstruction of the Key Generic Technological System of National Molecular Medicine as its primary concern and aims toestablish a multi-disciplinary & multi-functional research institution,which includes 4 translational platforms (The Institute of Molecular Genetics and Molecular Diagnostics, Institute of Molecular Cell and Molecular Imaging, Institute of Molecular Immunology and Personalized Precision Medicine,andInstitute of Clinical Molecular Medicine), accompanied with 8 function-basedtechnology centers (Cell Reprogramming and Stem Cell Technology Center, Cross-Omics Joint Center for Molecular Medicine, Biopharmaceutical Pilot Technology Center, Molecular Drug Research and Development Center, Technology Center forExperimental Resources, Humanized Animal Model Center, Center for R&D technology of Molecular Medical EquipmentandNational Medical Data Center), as well as 2 enterprises-based national technology centers (National Center for Clinical Molecular Medicine Testing, andNational Clinical Molecular Imaging Center).
